** French gas and power group Engie ENGIE.PA , which operates about 3,000 megawatts (MW) of power in Africa, wants to quadruple its capacity there over the next decade, newspaper Le Figaro reported.

** The paper quotes Engie's new Africa chief Yoven Moorooven as saying that the group is aiming to acquire an additional 10,000 MW and is studying some 40 projects in businesses ranging from infrastructure to home solar and mini-grids.

** Engie, which has global revenue of over 60 billion euros, last year had sales of 200 million euros in Africa, where it has a presence in some 15 countries. In Morocco it owns the 1,200 MW coal-fired Safi plant, in South Africa it owns 910 MW of coal-fired capacity. The utility, which has low-carbon strategy, plans to sell the coal-fired power stations in the coming years.
