U.S. shares lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.61%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas , Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.61%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.60%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.83%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS ), which rose 1.50% or 1.64 points to trade at 110.94 at the close. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE: WMT ) added 1.16% or 0.76 points to end at 66.42 and American Express Company (NYSE: AXP ) was up 0.56% or 0.43 points to 77.28 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE: CAT ), which lost 2.22% or 2.20 points to trade at 96.79 in late trade. E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE: DD ) declined 2.19% or 1.70 points to end at 76.00 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX ) shed 1.73% or 1.97 points to 111.82.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Affiliated Managers Group Inc (NYSE: AMG ) which rose 4.76% to 151.32, Alliance Data Systems Corporation (NYSE: ADS ) which was up 2.62% to settle at 228.18 and Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG ) which gained 2.40% to close at 72.00.

The worst performers were Transocean Ltd (NYSE: RIG ) which was down 7.08% to 13.85 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK ) which lost 6.65% to settle at 6.460 and Range Resources Corporation (NYSE: RRC ) which was down 6.64% to 33.34 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Eco Stim Energy Solutions Inc (NASDAQ: ESES ) which rose 48.15% to 2.000, Calithera Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ: CALA ) which was up 46.74% to settle at 6.75 and Real Goods Solar Inc (NASDAQ: RGSE ) which gained 29.38% to close at 4.5800.

The worst performers were Ocera Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ: OCRX ) which was down 70.73% to 0.600 in late trade, Regulus Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ: RGLS ) which lost 42.22% to settle at 1.300 and Opus Bank (NASDAQ: OPB ) which was down 25.14% to 20.40 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2287 to 948 and 32 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1943 fell and 602 advanced, while 88 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 12.48% to 11.90.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.51% or 6.05 to $1197.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.92% or 0.49 to hit $52.68 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.54% or 0.30 to trade at $55.40 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.01% to 1.0698, while USD/JPY fell 1.16% to 113.76.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.15% at 100.41.
