U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.12%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Oil & Gas , Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology , Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.12%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.80%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO ), which rose 2.02% or 0.88 points to trade at 44.54 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE: TRV ) added 1.88% or 2.05 points to end at 110.84 and EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE: DD ) was up 1.35% or 0.88 points to 65.97 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT ), which lost 7.17% or 4.00 points to trade at 51.78 in late trade. Visa Inc (NYSE: V ) declined 2.08% or 1.68 points to end at 79.11 and Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE ) shed 1.08% or 0.65 points to 59.43.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE: SWN ) which rose 14.89% to 12.27, Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC ) which was up 10.53% to settle at 91.33 and Range Resources Corporation (NYSE: RRC ) which gained 6.94% to close at 39.75.

The worst performers were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT ) which was down 7.17% to 51.78 in late trade, Perrigo Co (NYSE: PRGO ) which lost 5.70% to settle at 121.35 and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) which was down 5.46% to 737.42 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Eleven Biothera (NASDAQ: EBIO ) which rose 68.54% to 1.5000, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ: AMD ) which was up 52.29% to settle at 3.99 and Legacy Reserves LP (NASDAQ: LGCY ) which gained 44.67% to close at 2.17.

The worst performers were FreeSeas Inc (NASDAQ: FREE ) which was down 31.14% to 1.1500 in late trade, KBS Fashion Group Ltd (NASDAQ: KBSF ) which lost 18.34% to settle at 0.4083 and Rocky Brands Inc (NASDAQ: RCKY ) which was down 14.13% to 11.61 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2269 to 1041 and 32 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1624 rose and 946 declined, while 71 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.66% to 13.16.

In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 1.22% or 15.20 to $1235.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.27% or 0.55 to hit $43.73 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.35% or 0.60 to trade at $45.13 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.53% to 1.1228, while USD/JPY rose 1.99% to 111.64.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.47% at 95.06.
