U.S. shares higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.58%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms , Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.58%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.35%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.04%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG ), which rose 2.52% or 1.96 points to trade at 79.82 at the close. DowDuPont Inc (NYSE: DWDP ) added 1.59% or 1.06 points to end at 67.81 and General Electric Company (NYSE: GE ) was up 1.58% or 0.22 points to 14.17 in late trade.

Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE: JPM ), which lost 0.62% or 0.66 points to trade at 106.62 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE: GS ) declined 0.50% or 1.14 points to end at 226.85 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL ) shed 0.12% or 0.23 points to 190.35.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were PepsiCo Inc (NASDAQ: PEP ) which rose 4.76% to 112.89, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ: WYNN ) which was up 3.28% to settle at 165.38 and Navient Corp (NASDAQ: NAVI ) which gained 2.82% to close at 13.87.

The worst performers were Cerner Corporation (NASDAQ: CERN ) which was down 4.63% to 60.76 in late trade, Range Resources Corporation (NYSE: RRC ) which lost 3.08% to settle at 17.00 and Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE: PCG ) which was down 3.04% to 43.72 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were MER Telemanagement Solutions Ltd (NASDAQ: MTSL ) which rose 145.95% to 2.7300, Bridgeline Digital Inc (NASDAQ: BLIN ) which was up 75.57% to settle at 2.3000 and US Gold Corp (NASDAQ: USAU ) which gained 23.02% to close at 1.6300.

The worst performers were Tantech Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ: TANH ) which was down 43.56% to 1.49 in late trade, Staffing 360 Solutions Inc (NASDAQ: STAF ) which lost 34.73% to settle at 3.590 and MabVax Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: MBVX ) which was down 21.23% to 1.150 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1545 to 1509 and 127 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1601 fell and 954 advanced, while 129 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.71% to 12.60.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.28% or 3.50 to $1256.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.23% or 0.17 to hit $74.02 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.99% or 0.77 to trade at $78.84 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.05% to 1.1745, while USD/JPY rose 0.40% to 111.27.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 93.86.
