U.S. shares lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.52%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Industrials , Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.52%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.14%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL ), which rose 2.26% or 5.50 points to trade at 248.76 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE: TRV ) added 0.99% or 1.28 points to end at 131.06 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO ) was up 0.91% or 0.49 points to 54.43 in late trade.

Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE: MMM ), which lost 1.99% or 3.35 points to trade at 164.99 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ: WBA ) declined 1.93% or 1.08 points to end at 54.78 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE: CAT ) shed 1.82% or 2.55 points to 137.80.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ: ABMD ) which rose 14.20% to 207.58, Kraft Heinz Co (NASDAQ: KHC ) which was up 13.44% to settle at 32.33 and LKQ Corporation (NASDAQ: LKQ ) which gained 7.97% to close at 33.99.

The worst performers were Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ: WDC ) which was down 16.91% to 51.65 in late trade, Xylem Inc (NYSE: XYL ) which lost 8.77% to settle at 76.69 and Lincoln National Corporation (NYSE: LNC ) which was down 8.36% to 56.48 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Agile Thrpe (NASDAQ: AGRX ) which rose 223.80% to 1.20, Eloxx Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: ELOX ) which was up 80.18% to settle at 6.090 and Arbutus Biopharma Corp (NASDAQ: ABUS ) which gained 59.62% to close at 1.420.

The worst performers were Cocrystal Pharma Inc (NASDAQ: COCP ) which was down 35.53% to 0.7350 in late trade, Sunworks Inc (NASDAQ: SUNW ) which lost 33.65% to settle at 2.0900 and Merit Medical Systems Inc (NASDAQ: MMSI ) which was down 29.05% to 20.66 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1791 to 1095 and 84 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1666 fell and 976 advanced, while 75 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.22% to 13.22.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.24% or 18.60 to $1515.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.69% or 0.93 to hit $54.13 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.07% or 0.04 to trade at $59.47 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1152, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 108.04.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.34% at 97.110.
