U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.02%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Industrials , Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare , Financials and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.18%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE: BA ), which rose 2.00% or 6.50 points to trade at 330.69 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ: CSCO ) added 1.32% or 0.58 points to end at 44.44 and Visa Inc (NYSE: V ) was up 0.63% or 0.80 points to 127.18 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE ), which lost 1.99% or 1.36 points to trade at 66.90 in late trade. General Electric Company (NYSE: GE ) declined 1.76% or 0.25 points to end at 13.93 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE: HD ) shed 1.46% or 2.72 points to 183.19.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE: VMC ) which rose 7.51% to 122.20, Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE: MRO ) which was up 6.23% to settle at 19.44 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE: NRG ) which gained 6.14% to close at 32.35.

The worst performers were Cardinal Health Inc (NYSE: CAH ) which was down 21.42% to 50.80 in late trade, AmerisourceBergen (NYSE: ABC ) which lost 7.39% to settle at 85.37 and Hologic Inc (NASDAQ: HOLX ) which was down 6.89% to 36.91 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were VivoPower International PLC (NASDAQ: VVPR ) which rose 225.19% to 4.39, Euro Tech Holdings Company Limited (NASDAQ: CLWT ) which was up 155.56% to settle at 5.750 and China Recycling Energy Corp (NASDAQ: CREG ) which gained 56.58% to close at 2.3800.

The worst performers were Heat Biologics Inc (NASDAQ: HTBX ) which was down 48.59% to 1.275 in late trade, InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ: NVIV ) which lost 38.77% to settle at 8.26 and Mid-Con Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ: MCEP ) which was down 28.23% to 1.78 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1771 to 1282 and 124 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1646 fell and 881 advanced, while 120 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.63% to 16.07.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.53% or 6.90 to $1312.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.79% or 0.54 to hit $68.47 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.50% or 0.37 to trade at $73.73 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.29% to 1.1986, while USD/JPY fell 0.57% to 109.21.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.32% at 92.29.
