U.K. shares higher at close of trade; Investing.com United Kingdom 100 up 2.17%

Investing.com – U.K. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Industrial Metals & Mining , Oil & Gas Producers and Industrial Transportation sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 gained 2.17% to hit a new 52-week high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Antofagasta PLC (LON: ANTO ), which rose 7.49% or 100.50 points to trade at 1442.50 at the close. BHP Group PLC (LON: BHPB ) added 4.46% or 101.50 points to end at 2375.00 and Anglo American PLC (LON: AAL ) was up 3.88% or 125.5 points to 3364.5 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Taylor Wimpey PLC (LON: TW ), which lost 4.80% or 8.15 points to trade at 161.80 in late trade. Smith & Nephew PLC (LON: SN ) declined 4.56% or 61.00 points to end at 1277.50 and Johnson Matthey PLC (LON: JMAT ) shed 3.80% or 77.5 points to 1963.5.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1137 to 786 and 467 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.44% or 8.05 to $1826.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 2.12% or 1.72 to hit $82.94 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.48% or 1.24 to trade at $84.96 a barrel.

GBP/USD was up 0.50% to 1.3703, while EUR/GBP rose 0.16% to 0.8347.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.66% at 94.990.
