U.K. shares lower at close of trade; Investing.com United Kingdom 100 down 1.70%

Investing.com – U.K. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Gas, Water & Multiutilities , Automobiles & Parts and Oil & Gas Producers sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 lost 1.70% to hit a new 1-month low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Persimmon PLC (LON: PSN ), which rose 6.41% or 156.0 points to trade at 2589.0 at the close. Berkeley Group Holdings PLC (LON: BKGH ) added 3.80% or 161.0 points to end at 4400.0 and Barratt Developments PLC (LON: BDEV ) was up 1.95% or 10.20 points to 532.20 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (LON: RR ), which lost 10.95% or 31.50 points to trade at 256.30 in late trade. National Grid PLC (LON: NG ) declined 5.47% or 49.20 points to end at 850.00 and BP PLC (LON: BP ) shed 4.43% or 13.45 points to 290.00.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1434 to 700 and 160 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.88% or 16.00 to $1804.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 2.69% or 1.10 to hit $39.80 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.99% or 0.86 to trade at $42.43 a barrel.

GBP/USD was up 0.05% to 1.2615, while EUR/GBP fell 0.33% to 0.8952.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.33% at 96.690.
