U.S. shares higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.03%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology , Basic Materials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.19%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE ), which rose 2.38% or 3.62 points to trade at 155.98 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE: HD ) added 1.26% or 3.97 points to end at 318.25 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL ) was up 1.15% or 1.55 points to 136.33 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE: BA ), which lost 1.75% or 4.19 points to trade at 235.77 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS ) declined 1.51% or 2.66 points to end at 173.91 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC ) shed 1.25% or 0.72 points to 56.76.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Jefferies Financial Group Inc (NYSE: JEF ) which rose 7.04% to 34.21, Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ: SWKS ) which was up 4.50% to settle at 190.93 and Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ: QRVO ) which gained 4.48% to close at 195.73.

The worst performers were Fox Corp Class A (NASDAQ: FOXA ) which was down 3.84% to 36.84 in late trade, Apartment Investment and Management Co (NYSE: AIV ) which lost 3.46% to settle at 6.690 and Fox Corp Class B (NASDAQ: FOX ) which was down 3.23% to 35.03 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were BSQUARE Corporation (NASDAQ: BSQR ) which rose 206.11% to 8.020, Cerevel Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: CERE ) which was up 134.69% to settle at 29.50 and Marin Software Inc (NASDAQ: MRIN ) which gained 129.47% to close at 17.2100.

The worst performers were DiaMedica Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ: DMAC ) which was down 33.89% to 4.740 in late trade, ReShape Lifesciences Inc (NASDAQ: RSLS ) which lost 28.27% to settle at 5.480 and Mediwound Ltd (NASDAQ: MDWD ) which was down 28.01% to 4.060 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1818 to 1345 and 138 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2192 fell and 1268 advanced, while 140 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.65% to 16.02.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.05% or 18.75 to $1761.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.67% or 0.49 to hit $73.40 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.67% or 0.50 to trade at $74.64 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.18% to 1.1903, while USD/JPY fell 0.07% to 110.54.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 92.045.
