U.S. shares lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.31%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas , Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.31%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.44%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.57%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE ), which rose 1.33% or 1.42 points to trade at 108.39 at the close. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE: V ) added 0.99% or 1.98 points to end at 200.99 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE: GS ) was up 0.85% or 1.71 points to 203.02 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO ), which lost 2.17% or 1.05 points to trade at 47.37 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT ) declined 1.71% or 2.30 points to end at 132.41 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE: TRV ) shed 1.51% or 1.73 points to 113.20.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT ) which rose 12.65% to 154.22, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE: FCX ) which was up 3.68% to settle at 14.94 and CenturyLink Inc (NYSE: CTL ) which gained 3.58% to close at 11.29.
The worst performers were Jack Henry & Associates Inc (NASDAQ: JKHY ) which was down 12.88% to 172.22 in late trade, TJX Companies Inc (NYSE: TJX ) which lost 5.38% to settle at 54.36 and Gilead Sciences Inc (NASDAQ: GILD ) which was down 4.87% to 65.70 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sypris Solutions Inc (NASDAQ: SYPR ) which rose 81.37% to 1.8500, Momenta Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: MNTA ) which was up 69.17% to settle at 52.12 and Innodata Inc (NASDAQ: INOD ) which gained 45.83% to close at 2.450.
The worst performers were Biomarin Pharmaceutical Inc (NASDAQ: BMRN ) which was down 35.28% to 76.72 in late trade, GreenPro Capital Corp (NASDAQ: GRNQ ) which lost 31.52% to settle at 1.1300 and Galapagos NV ADR (NASDAQ: GLPG ) which was down 25.03% to 141.00 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1835 to 1197 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1464 fell and 1325 advanced, while 92 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.79% to 22.54.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 3.91% or 78.70 to $1934.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.39% or 0.17 to hit $42.95 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.04% or 0.02 to trade at $45.17 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1841, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 106.13.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.83% at 93.025.
