U.S. shares lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.31%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology , Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.31%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 2.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ: CSCO ), which rose 1.09% or 0.51 points to trade at 47.41 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG ) added 0.65% or 0.81 points to end at 126.16 and 3M Company (NYSE: MMM ) was up 0.37% or 0.58 points to 159.29 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL ), which lost 4.55% or 17.71 points to trade at 371.38 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT ) declined 4.35% or 9.21 points to end at 202.54 and Dow Inc (NYSE: DOW ) shed 3.43% or 1.52 points to 42.82.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE: WHR ) which rose 7.99% to 158.63, Globe Life Inc (NYSE: GL ) which was up 6.13% to settle at 80.32 and Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY ) which gained 5.68% to close at 146.33.
The worst performers were Citrix Systems Inc (NASDAQ: CTXS ) which was down 12.93% to 145.54 in late trade, Allegion PLC (NYSE: ALLE ) which lost 8.10% to settle at 102.56 and Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ: ALGN ) which was down 5.95% to 299.05 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Milestone Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: MIST ) which rose 166.77% to 8.91, Arbutus Biopharma Corp (NASDAQ: ABUS ) which was up 119.86% to settle at 6.20 and RigNet Inc (NASDAQ: RNET ) which gained 48.34% to close at 3.13.
The worst performers were Ascena Retail Group Inc (NASDAQ: ASNA ) which was down 25.70% to 0.59 in late trade, Check Cap Ltd (NASDAQ: CHEK ) which lost 20.01% to settle at 0.604 and 360 Finance Inc (NASDAQ: QFIN ) which was down 19.61% to 13.61 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1551 to 1292 and 85 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1675 fell and 1030 advanced, while 68 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.24% to 26.08.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.04% or 19.40 to $1884.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.00% or 0.84 to hit $41.06 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $43.34 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.01% to 1.1593, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 106.87.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.21% at 94.727.
