U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.27%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas , Utilities and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology , Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.27%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.38%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.29%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE: CAT ), which rose 3.91% or 8.87 points to trade at 235.55 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE: MMM ) added 2.76% or 2.71 points to end at 101.00 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE: GS ) was up 2.74% or 8.95 points to 335.75 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Salesforce Inc (NYSE: CRM ), which lost 3.35% or 7.12 points to trade at 205.73 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT ) declined 3.09% or 10.30 points to end at 323.38 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE: V ) shed 1.29% or 2.95 points to 225.27.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ: WBD ) which rose 8.43% to 13.12, Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE: WHR ) which was up 6.37% to settle at 145.98 and Stanley Black & Decker Inc (NYSE: SWK ) which gained 6.07% to close at 86.91.

The worst performers were Campbell Soup Company (NYSE: CPB ) which was down 8.91% to 46.08 in late trade, Intuit Inc (NASDAQ: INTU ) which lost 5.83% to settle at 422.36 and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ: AMD ) which was down 5.15% to 117.83 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were MGO Global Inc (NASDAQ: MGOL ) which rose 84.80% to 2.31, Farmer Bros. Co (NASDAQ: FARM ) which was up 70.47% to settle at 3.29 and Leafly Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: LFLY ) which gained 33.17% to close at 0.40.

The worst performers were Polarityte Inc (NASDAQ: PTE ) which was down 34.30% to 0.29 in late trade, Couchbase Inc (NASDAQ: BASE ) which lost 28.12% to settle at 15.98 and Recruiter.Com Group Inc (NASDAQ: RCRT ) which was down 27.53% to 0.28 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1975 to 1010 and 101 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2100 rose and 1454 declined, while 151 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.14% to 13.94 a new 3-year low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.27% or 25.25 to $1,956.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.09% or 0.78 to hit $72.52 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.76% or 0.58 to trade at $76.87 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.04% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.37% to 140.15.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 104.08.
