The debut of OpenAI’s ChatGPT represented a pivotal moment for the AI industry. Despite becoming the fastest-growing app in history, amassing 100 million users within two months, it was not enough to make artificial intelligence one of the biggest stories of 2023. While it attracted significant attention from venture capital investors, who injected billions of dollars into its parent company, OpenAI, the massive public interest did not translate into widespread usage.

According to data from AltIndex.com, ChatGPT still has limited usage, with fewer than 10% of daily users.

44% of Gen Z-ers and 58% of Millennials Have Never Used ChatGPT

Last year, ChatGPT emerged as the most visited Wikipedia article, accumulating nearly 50 million views, surpassing even high-profile figures like the world’s highest-paid athlete Cristiano Ronaldo and blockbuster films like Oppenheimer and Barbie. This trend reflects societal interests and the type of knowledge people sought. However, despite its immense popularity, the actual usage of the chatbot does not align.

According to a survey by YouGov for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism across six countries between March and April 2024, only one in ten people use ChatGPT daily. Even among the youngest age group (18 to 24), regular use of OpenAI’s chatbot is limited. Specifically, 18% use it weekly, while 12% use it monthly. Furthermore, 17% have used it only a few times, and merely 9% use it daily. Shockingly, 44% of Generation Z respondents have never used ChatGPT at all.

The disparity in usage between occasional, frequent, and non-users is even more pronounced in older age groups. For instance, only 6% of Millennials report daily usage of ChatGPT, contrasting with 15% who have used it occasionally, and a majority of 58% who have never used it. Among those aged 55 and above, heavy usage—defined as consulting ChatGPT at least weekly—plummets to a mere 3%, while a significant 87% of respondents in this age bracket have never used ChatGPT even once.

ChatGPT Turned OpenAI into the Most-Funded AI Company, Despite the Lack of Widespread Usage

Although ChatGPT is still far from widespread usage, its owner, OpenAI, has greatly benefited from its popularity. According to CB Insight’s analysis, OpenAI is the most funded AI startup in the world, and most of the VC capital was injected into the company after the release of its flagship product.

So far, OpenAI raised over $14 billion in capital through partnerships with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and other investments. Moreover, statistics show that ChatGPT owner alone raised more money than the next seven AI companies on CB Insight`s list, including Anthropic, Databricks, and Shield AI.

With $14 billion of fresh capital poured into its business, OpenAI has climbed to the top of the global unicorn club. Valued at $80 billion, the ChatGPT maker is now the world’s third most valuable unicorn company behind ByteDance and SpaceX and ahead of Chinese ecommerce giant SHEIN or the US payments provider Stripe.
